![]() After October 2022, users moved from on-premises to the cloud (that is, they become TeamsOnly) will no longer be provisioned with the Skype for Business Online infrastructure. If these users are invited to a Skype for Business meeting, they would need to join anonymously. After June 30, 2022, newly created TeamsOnly users will no longer be provisioned with the Skype for Business Online infrastructure. However, after Microsoft removes the Skype for Business Online infrastructure for a given Teams Only user, Teams Only users may only join Skype for Business meetings anonymously. Teams Only users may retain the Skype for Business client to join any Skype for Business meetings they already have or may receive in the future (that is, from external parties, or possibly from on-premises Skype for Business Server users in their own organization). They can't initiate chats or calls or schedule meetings in Skype for Business. Teams Only users receive incoming chats and calls in Teams, and also schedule meetings in Teams. A Teams Only user (in the past, sometimes called an upgraded user) has access to all the capabilities in Teams and can continue to communicate with any other users (whether in the same or external organization) who still use Skype for Business (provided the Skype for Business users aren't in Islands mode). Teams Only is the only mode available for pure online users. As was the case prior to retirement of Skype for Business Online, users homed on-premises can be assigned any mode other than TeamsOnly. It is no longer possible to assign any mode other than TeamsOnly to a user homed online. We recommend that you review the following coexistence modes to help determine which path is right for your organization.Ĭoexistence modes continue to exist after retirement of Skype for Business Online, however users homed online can only have a mode of TeamsOnly. For example, if you have significant Skype for Business Server on-premises assets with a complex Enterprise Voice deployment, but want your users to enjoy modern meetings as quickly as possible, you might want to evaluate using the Skype for Business with Teams Collaboration and Meetings mode, also known as Meetings First. However, a user can be assigned other coexistence modes to prevent this capability overlap for the user, in which case interoperability between Teams and Skype for Business is available. Islands mode allows the user to run Teams alongside Skype for Business with similar functionality available in both clients that is, the capabilities overlap. The default coexistence mode for on-premises users is Islands. Depending on what configuration you choose when providing Teams, these capabilities can overlap with the capabilities delivered by Skype for Business for a given user. Chat, calling and meeting functionality was also historically available in Skype for Business. Teams delivers collaboration capabilities, chat, calling, and meeting capabilities. In addition, the sections describe the interoperability (interop) that occurs between users on Skype for Business clients and users on Teams clients, and how interop is affected by the chosen coexistence mode. The following sections describe the coexistence modes that are available before you decide to upgrade on-premises Skype for Business Users to TeamsOnly, and the capabilities each mode offers. Users with an on-premises Skype for Business Server account may have any coexistence mode other than TeamsOnly. However, organizations with an on-premises deployment of Skype for Business Server may have users who are still homed on-premises these users can't be TeamsOnly. TeamsOnly mode ensures the users have full functionality of Teams. Coexistence of Teams and Skype for Business overviewĮver since the retirement of Skype for Business Online, all users in a pure-online organization (that is, an organization that doesn't have an on-premises deployment of Skype for Business) have a co-existence mode of TeamsOnly.
